Social Value

Huws Gray Supply Chain Solutions is committed to working to a set of business principles and standards that ensure the sustainability and improvement of both our company and the environment in which we conduct business.

Throughout the company, we work hard to increase focus on the balanced consideration of economic, social, and environmental matters. Our sustainability model is based around the well-renowned three pillars of; ‘people, profit and planet’. When we break this down into 9 focal areas, it allows us to tackle sustainability across the business in a more manageable and succinct manner.

Targets are set within each focal area; these are reviewed and updated on an annual basis, to indicate whether progress is being made or if improvements can be made in specific areas.

A selection of our community projects include:

Building Student 1256x1884

Sutton-in-Ashfield Partnership with Vision West Nottinghamshire College

Huws Gray Sutton-in-Ashfield have developed an amazing partnership with the post-16 training college with 11,000 learners. This partnership promotes sustainability and environmental consciousness as ALL of the branch’s damaged plasterboard is donated to the college for reuse in training.

The college is also invited to purchase any other damaged goods at a discount, such as chipped sanitary ware which is unsaleable to the public but perfectly usable for training and education.

This partnership has also benefited the college and associated community through a staff and student account and multiple supplier engagement days and talks. These events go towards the students’ educational training, and top learners are invited to engage with suppliers directly for further advice and development opportunities.

Suppliers such as Ox Tools, Milwaukee Tools, and Walsh Blyth & Turton PPE have come along to trade days, the latter of the three donating 300 pairs of socks. Our Sutton-in-Ashfield Huws Gray branch has also facilitated a partnership between the college and green supplier to help support their growing green initiative through the donation of £50,000 worth of green products.

Oxford Hub Community Garden

Oxford Direct Service and Oxford Hub August 2024

In relation to our material supply contract with Oxford Direct Services, Customer Relationship Manager, Jason Trundley, organised the donation of £500 worth of equipment for the Oxford Hub to support their community garden regeneration.

This included water butts, sleepers, soil, and more – everything needed to bring their green space to life. It will help create a vibrant community space where people can come together to grow food and enjoy the outdoors. This is especially important for those who don’t have their own garden or live alone.

ODS said “Huws Gray is our valued local supplier, and they’ve made this generous contribution in conjunction with the ODS partnership. So we’re proud to be a part of this initiative that’s making a positive difference in our community”.

Church Vale Primary Social Values 1232x804

Church Vale Primary School

Huws Gray is delighted to have supported the students at Church Vale Primary School and Foundation Unit in their wonderful ‘Bug hotel’ project. This was successfully built as part of the RSPB ‘Wild Challenge’.

Our branch at Sutton in Ashfield provided the school with wooden pallets, roof tiles, pipes and some Huws Gray T-shirts for the children to get to work. “It’s great to see the younger generation getting into a green project and supporting their local environment. Well done” – Jason, Branch Manager.

School Toilets 1256x805

Toddington St. George Church of England School

Within our Peabody contract, we supported Toddington School by supplying materials needed to refurbish and paint their toilets giving them a new lease of life and a nicer environment for the school children.

This was part of the Government-initiated Condition Improvement Fund.

Boy With Football 1256x707

Cheltenham Borough Council

As a result of fire damage to a local football team’s clubhouse, Rowanfield Rovers, we were approached by a group of parents asking whether we could support/help rectify the damage caused by a fire. The clubhouse was due to be shut down due to safety concerns, preventing children from playing sports at this local ground.

To support this great cause we donated plasterboard, plaster, timber and bricks to rebuild the clubhouse, preventing it from being closed down and allowing the team to continue playing sports in their local community.

Garden Flower 1256x836

Derby Homes

As part of our contract with Derby Homes, we donated materials to build low-maintenance gardens for the elderly/less abled tenants.

As a result of our donation, residents now have access to well-maintained and safe gardens. The materials also made their homes more accessible, through the implementation of a wheelchair or a walking banister aid.

Child Sensory Garden 1256x1884

St Ebbs Primary School and Dovecoat Sensory Garden

We donated garden materials for a Sensory Garden for St Ebbs Primary School and Dovecoat. Both facilities arrange afterschool care for children, mainly for children with additional needs.

The donation allowed children to be able to safely play outside and engage in activities outside of school and in their local community.

Both facilities thanked us for our contribution and Carol from Dovecoat said:

“The valuable support given by Huws Gray in the creation of Dovecote sensory garden enabled us, a small local charity, to create an adventure environment providing lots of sensory experience for disadvantaged children and families. Their support was significant and instantly visual. We cannot thank them enough for giving us the tools to build a stronger community.”
